News: Branson to lead protest march to ICASA
"Virgin Mobile Leads Cell Phone Users’ protest march on A Long Walk To Freedom!
Please do join us …
Hundreds of ‘Virginites’ & supporters will be taking to the streets
of Sandton, Joburg wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Set us
free with MNP”.
We know that you feel strongly about Mobile Number Portability. We
invited you to join Virgin Mobile in campaigning to speed up the
implementation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP). MNP has repeatedly
been postponed as a result of requests by the network operators. We
will be taking a long walk to freedom this Thursday 21st September 2006
@16h00 from cnr of Rivonia Street and Katherine Street, Sandton, to the
head offices of the Independent Communications Authority of South
Africa (ICASA) in Katherine Street, Sandton.
The walk will culminate with the delivery of an open letter by Sir
Richard Branson, Virgin Mobile South Africa founder and Chairman of the
Virgin Group.
In Virgin Mobile’s experience, MNP puts the customer in the driver’s
seat and allows competition to thrive. Our goal with this campaign is
to bring MNP to South Africa now.
The move to MNP has been delayed by ICASA numerous times and the latest
date, 18 September 2006, was moved out again, this time to 10 November
2006. It is, however, not yet confirmed whether this date too will be
moved out as a result of pressure by the incumbent market players.
With your support in our “Long Walk to Freedom” we believe that MNP
will be achieved sooner rather than later. Come on now, let MNP set you
free!."
This is an email sent out a few hours ago by Virgin. Although
Virgin has organised this specifically about MNP, we think its
best to be viewed as general march to show disatisfaction with ICASA
because if this march is successful it will be viewed as exactly that.
We
therefore urge anyone who is able to get there, to go along, take some
pics, and register your satisfaction with the poor regulation of our
telecoms industry.
Anyone want to sponsor some plane tickets to Jozi tomorrow to get some
eager Antitrust members, please contact helpusout@antitrust.co.za.

News: The Advert to tell the world
Antitrust is joining Tectonic's call to citizens, business and
government to wake up about Telkom's atrocious behaviour and the
current state of our telecoms industry. An advert
is being taken out, probably in the Mail&Guardian, registering our
severe dissatisfaction and, hopefully, crying foul play in the telecoms
sector.
This is a lot more than just a bunch of consumers unhappy with prices.
International observers and world-leading foreign academics and
analysts have been warning and warning that what is going on in
telecoms in SA is stifling our economy and hurting our democracy, and
that the longer we allow this to happen, the more difficult it is going
to be to break out of. There are severe economic and political consequences
for countries who do not liberalise their telecoms industries in the
correct window of opportunity. Our window is just inches from being
shut for a long long time. This is not just about grossly overpaying
for your ADSL line.
I can tell you that there are certain obligations that South Africa has
to bodies like the World Trade Organisation with regards to
liberalising our telecoms industry, and that, internationally, bodies
like this have noted their concerns to our government. This advert will
tell these bodies that YES, WE TOO ARE CONCERNED. Yes, these bodies
must come and take a look at what's been happening the last few years.
The M&G is the paper to get their attention, as well as the
attention of the president, local and international universities,
foreign investors, politicians, intellectuals, ICASA, businesses, the
Minister of Communications, and a fair portion of our fellow sleepy
South African citizens.
They too are sick of the mishandling of the sector.
They too are appalled at new restrictions on the Second Network Operator.
They too are desperate for clarity about the ADSL regulations.
They too are scared for the future of our economy, a very real danger lurks in tomorrow.
They too have seen all cries for Telkom and ICASA and government to be held accountable be silenced.
They too believe that the situation with Telkom is affecting our democracy very badly.
They too are angry at being ignored.
This sort of thing has been talked about forever. But that's the darn
problem with us. WE behave like politicians - we talk talk talk and
never do anything meaningful. The we turn around and accuse politicians
of doing the same thing. Amazing, isn't it?
Almost R10 000 has been pledged. Put your name in the advert's print. Stop being like a politician and put your money where you mouth is, and set a precedent in South Africa.
Here's the link if you didn't get it already: http://www.tectonic.co.za/tag.php

News: You can make a difference
UPDATE: Rudolph Muller and Gregg Stirton were not shortlisted
because of technical fault with the way in which they were nominated.
Debbie Love went through to the next round. Congrats!
Fed up with high phone and internet costs? Angry that you
can't afford ADSL? Do you think it's "just wrong" that Mozambique
gets broadband offerings SEVEN TIMES CHEAPER than what you pay in South
Africa?
Do Something!
ICASA is the body that is supposed to regulate the telecoms
industry. Parliament is now looking for 5 new ICASA councillors. The list of
nominees has been published, and included on that list are:
Mr Rudolph Muller (of MyADSL)
Mr Gregg Stirton (of Hellkom)
Ms Debbie Love (of
Antitrust)
These are people who have stood up for telecoms consumer
rights, and we believe they can make a difference if they were to get onto the
ICASA council. If you are a consumer who is waiting for change and
liberalisation in the telecoms sector in South
Africa, waiting for lower priced calls,
waiting for affordable broadband, you should tell some politicians.

New Antitrust Video: Is it cheaper to download in Mozambique?
Telkom like to complain that they are treated unfairly. Whenever a new
survey shows Telkom to be a few hundred percent more expensive than a
bunch of other countries, Telkom moans bitterly. Non-stop.
"It's unfairrrr", they whine, "you're comparing us to developed countries! Granny Ivy, the public is being unfair again!"
The funny thing is that every time we ask Telkom to exactly which
countries they would like to be compared, they refuse to answer, like a
petulant little girl.
"We'll never be as cheap as the USA or the UK!" they blurted at us recently.
OK, so what about Mozambique then........
http://www.antitrust.co.za/beta/files/Telkom_vs_Mozambique.wmv
The link above is to the new Antitrust video-short. It's a comparison of Telkom's ADSL prices to prices in Mozambique.
The file is 1.21mb in size. It's short, small, and shocking! Oh, and for full effect, turn your speakers on.

News: Parody Telecoms Ad
We found out that we're not alone out there in fighting our telecoms
company. A lot of other countries are exploited by their own deceitful telecoms monopolies as well, and in
those countries, there are people like you and I who are fighting them
back.
